Community Support Services - Tools to Create a Better Life

One of Chabad’s primary objectives is to help those in need. Our crisis support arm provides emergency relief and assistance wherever required. We aim to put people in touch with the relevant community service and advocate for them to ensure they receive the treatment and services they require. Our crisis support operations - including our community support workers, Rabbi and social workers - are open to the entire community within the ACT and the region.

Every day we provide crisis assistance, meals, once-o aid for basic necessities, housing solutions, counselling, financial aid, employment and training services, and support for the elderly including Holocaust survivors. We have a strong focus on helping people towards self-suciency.

Chabad ACT makes it easy for people to access our services. Our programs not only aim to alleviate the conditions of poverty and disadvantage in the community, but also aim to equipt people with essential tools to create a better life for themselves.

Food Bank

Chabad ACT operates a food bank with frozen and fresh meals provided upon request to people in need. Whether in nancial diculties or just not well enough to make dinner,

Chabad ACT will be there. All our meals are strictly Kosher under the supervision of Canberra

Kosher making us the only Kosher food bank in the ACT and region.

Weekly food parcels are delivered to many members of the Canberra and region community.

These parcels include cooked meals and raw basic groceries. The food bank is also open for people to come to pick up food.

Many of our meals are made by volunteers and many of our raw products are donated much of this salvaged from local supermarkets. We provide volunteering opportunities for those wishing to join in the food production, even those without cooking experience.

We are a registered Food Bank NSW/ACT distribution centre and are fully approved as an ACT licensed food business. All the food we produce and donate conform with the highest safety standards.

Counselling - Someone to Talk to

Chabad ACT provides professional counselling on a wide range of issues including parenting, relationships, trauma, bereavement, abuse- past and present, addiction and mental health. This vital service aims to source temporary help and ongoing treatment for individuals, couples or families.

Since "Goodness and Kindness" introduced social workers to its portfolio of community services, it has increased its reach to more individuals. In combining spiritual care with modern methods, a successful, innovative and wholesome approach to treating crises has been established and implemented.

Financial Assistance

No-one is immune to tough financial times. Our Chabad ACT welfare fund (tax deductible) donates many thousands of dollars each year to the most vulnerable in our society and those who are faced with sudden financial stress. These donations can be one o in times of crisis, or maybe in the form of ongoing support. We also provide a free loan fund.

In addition to odering free and confidential financial counseling, we provide valuable programs to help people get back on their feet. We will also put people in touch with relevant government and other agencies.

Crisis Accommodation - A Place to Stay When in Crisis

Chabad ACT has two bedrooms available for people experiencing short term crises. Our doors are open for anyone in crisis, whether financial, relationship crises or instance of abuse.

Housing Support - A Place to Feel Secure

In the ACT, long government housing waiting lists and increasing government housing rents have made finding public and transitional housing very difficult. Chabad ACT helps people navigate the complex and sometimes overwhelming process of applying for accommodation. We also provide assistance in finding live-in or shared arrangements. We assist with emergency housing via our financial assistance program for temporary arrangements while suitable long term solutions can be found.
